Today, MediaTek confirmed Dimensity 1000 SoC, its upcoming 5G flagship SoC. A 5G SoC is from MediaTek is not at all surprising because it was announced back in May. Back then, the company discussed its expected SoC’s 5G capabilities along with the inclusion of the new Cortex-A77 and Mali-G77 IPs. Today, in simple words, what MediaTech did is nothing but confirmed the product and give it an official name. Apart from this, the company discussed a handful of specifications of the upcoming chipset.
It seems that the name “Dimensity” is meant to usher in a new generation and differentiate the new 5G SoC from its previous 4G Helio line-up.
MediaTek President Joe Chen said, “We chose the name Dimensity to highlight how our 5G solutions are driving new waves of innovation and experiences, much like the fabled fifth dimension.”
Dimensity SoC is powered by a Cortex A77 CPU. MediaTek explained that Dimensity 1000 is a 4 x Cortex A77 setup clocked at 2.6 GHz alongside 4 x Cortex A55 setup clocked at 2.0 GHz. Currently, the clocking of 2.6 GHz is a good one so it is expected that Dimensity 1000 will be a high end SoC.
The fact that this SoC comes with as many as 4 big cores, it seems that it is a slow departure from MediaTek’s CPU strategy of the previous few years. Apart from this, this SoC also comes with a Mali G77 GPU in an MP9 configuration and the overall setup is 19% smaller than the MP11 in the Exynos 990. Moreover, the chip continues to support LPDDR4 –RAM.
The company has also employed a third generation neural processing unit which it calls “APU 3.0” which according to the company doubles the performance provided by its previous generation.
MediaTek said that we will be seeing devices based on this SoC later this year as well as in early 2020.
